VHF refers to which frequency range?

30 to 300 MHz

VHF is the band that covers frequencies from about 30 to 300 MHz. This places it between the High Frequency range and the Ultra High Frequency range, corresponding to wavelengths roughly from 10 meters down to 1 meter. At these frequencies, radio waves travel mainly by line of sight, so practical aircraft antennas can efficiently radiate and receive signals with relatively simple equipment, which is why VHF is standard for aviation voice communications and many navigation aids. In aviation practice you’ll commonly see airband operations around 118 to 137 MHz, well inside VHF. The other ranges lie either higher (the region around 3 to 30 GHz) or lower (the region around 300 to 3000 kHz or 300 to 3000 MHz), so they are not VHF.
